James Leslie Newsom, Sr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 15, 2023 in Athens,
Texas.

James was born on January 2, 1943, to Joe Thomas Newsom and Florine Cathey. He spent
much of his childhood growing up in Buckner Orphans Home along with his three brothers.
James joined the United States Army in the summer of 1959, serving both state-side and
abroad.

James married his beloved wife, Margaret Irene Leveritt, in the spring of 1964. They were
married for 42 years, living in Rowlett, Texas where they raised three sons. James made a
career as a respected Electrician, working for many years at Lehigh Press in Carrollton, Texas.
He enjoyed hobbies such as traveling with Irene and his grandchildren, and riding any of his
various Harley Davidson motorcycles over the years.

James was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Billy Jack Newsom and Charles Ray
Newsom, and his beloved wife Irene (d. 2006). He is survived by his current wife Linda
Stephens Newsom of Mabank, TX; his sons, Jim Newsom (Christy) of Royse City, TX, Donnie
Ray Newsom of Ft. Worth, TX, and Thomas Wayne Newsom (Heather) of Kingwood, TX; his
brother Robert Newsom of Wichita, KS; his grandchildren Candi Newsom, Chelsey Barron (Jeff)
of Nevada, TX, Brittany Mull (Chris) of Royse City, TX, Donnie Ray Newsom Jr of White
Settlement, TX, Austin James Newsom (Megan) of Ardmore City, OK, Kathryn Newsom of
Massillon, OH, Ethan Thomas Newsom of Garland, TX, Rachel Olivia Newsom and Emily Kate
Newsom of Kingwood, TX; his eight great grandchildren, Bailey, Janie, Rylan, Cale, Henry,
Logan, Millie, and Jacob; his stepchildren, Rick (Brenda), Sonja (David), Sheryl (Donnie), and
many step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, TX at
11:30 AM on October 24, 2023. All are welcome to attend.
